Dealing With Chicken Skin
Getting goose bumps is a normal body reaction. And after a few moments, they disappear. But what if they don’t?
These bumps are harmless, but irritating because they often resemble acne and appear as dry, rough patches of skin.
This is called keratosis pilaris, but commonly known as chicken skin. They appear on the back of your arms, thighs and your bum; it can even appear as a red rash on your cheeks. But what causes this annoying condition?
That answer is excess build up of keratin in the hair follicles. What’s not known is why. If you have a family history of atopic dermatitis, you are more likely to develop it.
So can you prevent it? Intensive moisturizing is key, even as much as several times a day initially. Look for moisturizers that contain urea. These tend to be more effective.
Consider topical retinoids to encourage the skin to turn over more quickly. We can help you there. Don’t forget humidifiers to increase moisture in your house, too.
Chicken skin is considered harmless by the medical profession, but we know it can take a toll on your self-esteem. So take these simple steps to minimize its appearance and get your confidence soaring!
